Grantham RiverCare Team add another string to their River Hero bows
On a very chilly Saturday morning, seven members of the Grantham RiverCare team turned out to learn more about water quality monitoring as part of the FreshWaterWatch global citizen science research project.
The willing volunteers learned about how high phosphate and nitrate levels negatively impact on river wildlife and how to use the pre-prepared chemical testing kits to test these levels. They also learned how to test the turbidity (cloudiness) of the water.
We even braved the cold to have a practice run from the amenity berm in Wyndham Park (please note the chemical tubes shown in the photograph that we used for training were out of date so do not accurately represent the actual levels of Nitrates in the River).
The training was delivered by Gail, our Project Officer and we will also be providing the equipment and chemical kits for the foreseeable future. With advice from the Environment Agency, seven testing sites in and around Grantham have been identified and will be shared out and tested monthly by a group of eleven RiverCare volunteers. All the results will be uploaded onto the FreshWaterWatch website (freshwaterwatch.thewaterhub.org) and any anomalies will be reported to the Environment Agency for investigation.
In the light of recent, horrific pollution events, the Lincolnshire Rivers Trust team are delighted to have the help of the Grantham RiverCare team not only keeping our stretch of the River Witham free from litter but helping to monitor the health of the local watercourses too. In the future we will also be working together to find ways we can help the health of the duck population along with other aquatic wildlife in Grantham so watch this space….
